Cairn Oil & Gas Continues to be Net Water Positive Company for Three Consecutive Years; ~7 Lakh kL Water Recycled in five years


New Delhi, 22 March 2025: On the occasion of World Water Day 2025, Cairn Oil & Gas, part of Vedanta Group and India’s largest private oil and gas exploration and production company, underscores its continued commitment to sustainable water management.

With dedicated efforts, Cairn is championing water stewardship through water conservation across its operations while ensuring that communities have access to clean and safe water. The company’s comprehensive program focuses on conserving water resources, promoting efficient usage, enhancing recycling and harvesting rainwater to sustain and improve water positivity.

In the past few years, Cairn has undergone transformative changes resulting in achieving key milestones and setting industry benchmarks. 

  1. Net Water Positive Company: Cairn Oil & Gas has been a Net Water Positive company since FY22, with an increasing Net Positive Water Impact (NPWI) Index of 1.15. 
  2. Saline Water Utilisation: Over 99% of the operational water requirements are fulfilled through saline water resources, reducing burden on freshwater sources, ensuring availability to communities.
  3. Water Conservation: Through advanced water recycling technologies, Cairn has conserved approximately 7 lakh KL of water in the last five years, achieving a water recycling rate of 85% in FY25. 
  4. Produced Water Reinjection: The company achieved ~97% of produced water recycling through reinjection in FY25, exceeding IOGP Global benchmark of 62%. 

Cairn promotes shared value and is committed to enhance the overall well-being and quality of life among local communities. As part of its social impact initiatives, Cairn has taken measures to ensure access to clean and safe water in the region where it operates. 

In Rajasthan, Cairn supported the local communities in conserving water through various interventions under Barmer Unnati project. To date, we have developed ~1100 rainwater harvesting structures in Barmer community area to create annual rainwater harvesting potential of 2.17 million KL. These structures include 37 Nadis, 973 Khadins, 90+ RWH. Alongside, building 15 community borewells and establishing 124 water ATM to provide clean drinking water to hundreds of households. The company aims to develop 100+ structures in Barmer district by end of 2025 to enable harvesting of 3 million KL of rainwater annually. More than 60,000 community members benefit from these interventions.

In Assam, the company has installed seven tubewells in Pas Chamua village of Naginijan, ensuring clean drinking water for hundreds of people in the area. In addition, it has equipped important local public offices with Reverse Osmosis (RO) purifiers to ensure clean drinking water for the citizens visiting these offices to avail public services such as government schemes and legal matters.

This year’s World Water Day theme ‘Glacier Preservation’ stresses the urgent need to protect glaciers worldwide to maintain the planet’s water cycle and freshwater availability. In line with the ESG Goal of Transforming the Planet, Cairn is committed to undertake mass plantation and preserve ecologically sensitive species through biodiversity initiatives. As part of its goal to plant 2 million trees by 2030, the company has already done 7.6 lakh trees including mangroves, prioritising native species for carbon offsets and ecosystem restoration.
